Gourmet Grilled cheese sandwich featuring Havarti and sliced apples

I found a recipe card at my local Kroger. It’s a simple grilled cheese recipe but with a surprise.  Apples and Cinnamon! 

My kids loved the apple and cinnamon surprise.  It’s grilled cheese with a twist.

Ingredients

3 Tbsp. softened butter.

1 granny smith apple, cored and thinly sliced.

4 Tbsp sugar (optional)*.

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon.

8 thick slices Honey Oat Pre-sliced bread*.

8 slices Wisconsin Havarti cheese.

Place griddle on medium heat.

Lightly butter four slices of bread and place on griddle, butter side down.

Top each with one slice of Havarti and several thin slices of apple.

Combine cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon-sugar mixture, and add another slice of Havarti.

Lightly butter remaining four slices of bread and top sandwiches, butter side up.

Brown on each side 3-5 minutes, until golden and Havarti begins to melt and cool  for a few minutes before serving.

Healthy Tips:

*Omit the sugar for a healthier sandwich. I didn’t use any sugar and it tasted great.

*You may also use sprouted grain bread.  I like the Simple Nature Sprouted 7 grain bread, it’s available in Aldi for less than $3. Although I used regular bread when I tried this recipe. I also used Hormel Oven roasted turkey slices(No Nitrites added).
